HP iPAQ rx4000 Mobile Companion Series
Leafing through random gadget mags about a month ago, I came across something ingenius that will bridge the convenience of retaining my handy clam shell phone and getting the benefits of a Pocket PC. The gadget costs only US$ 300.00, more or less, depending on how much it fetches should it become available locally.
I was refering to the sexy HP iPAQ rx4240 Mobile Media Companion Series. Get the higher numbered model rx4540 and with it comes an impressive 128MB + 1Gb flash ROM. The 128Mb ROM on the rx4240 is good enough, though, thanks to its SD/MMC card expansion slot that more than makes up for this particular shortcoming. It sports Wifi (802.11b/g WLAN) and Bluetooth v2.0 (for stereo quality music listening via a compatible headset). Double your budget, get one from the rx5000 series, and you get GPS!
For clarification, the HP iPAQ rx4000 Series is a Pocket PC that's still running on Windows Mobile 5, not Windows Mobile 6, via a Samsung 400 MHz processor. It does not have mobile phone features, meaning, should you be a noob, duh, you can not make calls off it unless you use Skype via WiFi which I heard sucks with this baby. No text messages, either. However, you will get the entire Pocket PC experience at a reasonably low price.
The video review below from MobilitySite.com has everything you need to know on the rx4540. It was launched in Australia and Singapore late last year and will probably get here by God-knows-when.
As of writing this article, them Pocket PCs can't get any better than this based on cost per return per square inch of enjoyment.
